Chinese Herbal Medicine

General Information

Along with Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine is one of the oldest forms of medicine and has been utilized for thousands of years. It was originally designed to treat ailments that existed thousands of years ago but has been adapted to treat modern western diseases. The combination of herbs is based on time-tested formulas, with each component of the formula designed to enhance or balance the others.

What can Chinese herbs treat?

Chinese herbs can be used for the same conditions acupuncture treats, which is quite a wide variety of conditions ranging from backaches to insomnia. Both chronic and acute conditions can be treated by using Chinese herbs. A combined treatment plan of acupuncture and herbs can enhance the overall effect of treating a pattern of symptoms without the unwanted side effects commonly associated with western pharmaceuticals.

What makes up Chinese herbs?

Chinese herbs consist of seeds, bark, roots, plants, minerals and some animal products. All of the formulas carried, as well as loose raw herbs and granular herbs, are GMP certified (Good Manufacturer Procedure). This means that all herbs have been tested for heavy metals, pesticides and have met the highest standard possible. There are many companies that produce Chinese herbs but few are GMP certified.

What can I expect from my herbal consultation?

During your herbal consultation, a comprehensive evaluation will take place and then a brief physical examination. Afterwards, a unique costumized formula consisting of between 4-20 different herbs will be prescribed based on the patient's history and examination. Herbs will be carefully chosen to address both the root cause and symptoms of the condition. Formulas are usually taken in the form of a tea, tincture or pill. As your condition changes and improves, your herbal formula may be adjusted until your condition stabilizes or subsides.

I take Western prescription medications. Can I take them with my herbal formula?

Please consult with your physician before taking your herbal formula. In addition, please bring with you a list of all medications when you come for your appointment. Please make sure to continue any and all medications and consult your physician before making ANY changes.
